18 January 2011

Anyone interested in motor sport knows that officials make the day run smooth. They keep you as the driver out there so you can have fun. This Saturday (22 January) Queensland Raceway will play host to a multi-faceted introduction and information day for motor sport enthusiasts to learn how to become an official for all forms of the sport, from club level to V8 Supercars, Super Bikes and beyond.

Information will be extended on how volunteers can progress from club level circuit, drag, bike and kart racing through to the high-powered world of V8 Supercars, Formula One, Super Bikes and the mighty ANDRA Pro Series.

The day is open to all motor sport fans and is designed as an ideal first step for those who’ve ever had an inkling they’d like to be involved in one of the vital roles played by volunteer officials in the running and co-ordination of motor racing events.

Staff from Queensland Raceways (circuit racing) will be joined by representatives from Motorcycle Queensland (the state’s motorcycle racing peak body), Willowbank Raceway (drag racing) and the Ipswich Go-kart Club, to explain the various roles involved in their specific areas of motor sport.

These representatives will cover the first steps needed to be taken to become a flag marshal, track marshal, timekeeper, scrutineer or one of the many other vital roles, without which motor sport simply could not function.

A variety of drag cars, go-karts, bikes and racing cars will be on hand and following a light lunch at 12.30pm attendees have the choice of remaining at Queensland Raceway to observe the Ipswich Open Sprints or driving a few hundred metres up the road to Willowbank Raceway to watch a “test and tune” afternoon on the drag strip.

Interested parties need to arrive at Queensland Raceway at 8am for an 8.30am start.
