ANDRA Pro Series Top Fuel points leader Darren Morgan believes that a good run in this weekend's Top Fuel Championships at the Perth Motorplex is vital in his bid to become the 2010/2011 champion.
The Hungry Jacks Mildura-backed driver, who enters this weekend’s event two points clear of Andrew Cowin at the top of the points standings, is full of confidence following a ‘Match Race’ exhibition at the venue last November.
“This weekend is probably the most significant round for the championship, there are 50% more points on offer than any other round, there are more Top Fuellers than ever before at Perth and there is only two points between myself and Andrew,” said Morgan.
“We went to Perth last year as a data gathering mission while competing in a match race alongside Phil Lamattina. During that event we had a series of runs that culminated in a win over Lamattina in the final run, which gives us some confidence.”
After getting his first taste of action with the Darren Morgan Racing team during the rain-affected event in Queensland earlier this month, Hungry Jacks Mildura’s Greg Stephens is ready for more action this weekend.
“When we took the covers off the Hungry Jacks Mildura Darren Morgan Racing Top Fuel Dragster in Queensland we turned a lot of heads, which was very pleasing,” said Stephens.
“Our aim is to not only put Hungry Jacks in the minds of all of the drag racing fans out there but also put Mildura on the map. With Darren fighting for the championship the way he is now, another good run this weekend will certainly see some of our goals achieved.”
Morgan will take to the quarter-mile strip for opening qualifying this afternoon at 5:55pm (WA time) followed by a further two runs this evening. The elimiation races will be contested tomorrow evening from 6:00pm (WA time) with the final scheduled for 10:00pm (WA time).
