The biggest drag racing event of its kind in the world - Jamboree - is set to celebrate its 21st birthday at Willowbank Raceway with a wild weekend of turbo charged racing action, this Saturday and Sunday - August 27/28.
From the moment the gates open at 8:30am, fans will be surrounded by some of the most high tech drag racing machinery in the world, from the world’s fastest import drag cars to seven-second street bikes, and a host of off track entertainment.
Two of the world’s fastest machines over the quarter mile in the Sport Compact style of racing will be on hand at Willowbank Raceway, but they aren’t Australian as you might expect – or even American for that matter:
Rod Harvey’s Rayglass Boats Celica is the fastest sport compact car in the world, a Super Compact and ANDRA National Champion for the class, Harvey’s 3.2 litre turbo-charged Toyota engine has been clocked at over 360kph at a 6.41 second pass.
Fellow Kiwi Reece McGregor’s Heat Treatments Limited R32 Skyline GTR is the fastest four-wheeled drive vehicle in the world. It has been clocked at over 313kph on a 7.57 second pass. Four-wheel drive on a drag strip presents a whole new challenge and requires unique skill to get the car down the track.
Off-track – Jamboree is jam-packed with activities for the punters. There are babe and bikini shows, Strawberry Minx dancers and a mega Show n’ Shine.
Numerous trade and car club displays that have been a feature of Jamboree will be on hand once again, whilst for the first time – the world famous Showtime FMX team, and the Flair Trials team will join Matt Mingay (and his stunt team) who are seen at many V8 Supercar events, entertaining the crowds all day long.
Jamboree promoter – Ray Box – expects a huge turnout.
“Jamboree is unique and has positioned itself as one of the biggest weekends of the year for car enthusiasts in South-East Queensland,” he said. “We’ve got the Jamboree J Trophies up for grabs – one of the biggest honours in the sport.
“It’s the 21st year of Jamboree this year – and like any other 21st – it’s going to be a huge party. There’ll be plenty going on both on and off track all weekend – we’re so excited about the addition of Matt Mingay’s stunt crew and the Showtime FMX display this year.
“We keep looking for ways to make Jamboree even better…I think we’ve outdone ourselves this time!”
One of Willowbank Raceway’s longest running events, Saturday launches with qualifying before the eliminations kick into gear on Sunday.
Jamboree 21 is set to bring South East Queensland to life over the two days, with the best in high-tech drag racing and off-track entertainment in Australian motorsport all in the one venue.
The 21st Jamboree will be held this weekend – August 27 and 28 – at Willowbank Raceway, see www.jamboree.com.au for more details.
