After finding the set-up ‘sweet spot’ with his 1968 Chev Camaro recently, Lance Larcombe is looking forward to heading to next weekend’s South Coast Nationals.
The December 14 and 15 event at Portland’s South Coast Raceway marks round six of the 2019/2020 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series.
“We have been working hard on the car and after softening up the rear end just before our last event it seems we have found that sweet spot,” Larcombe explained.
“We were very happy when we were the DecoGlaze Glass Splashbacks Victoria Top Qualifier for Super Sedan at the Rowe Memorial. It was the first time I had top qualified after being second on the sheets plenty of times, so it was pretty special.
“I have to thank my partner Donna Mee for all of her help and ongoing support; my good mate Ryan Lee of R/T Race Craft for his work on the car and his dad Reg Lee for his advice; Cleveland Freightlines; Overland Locksmiths; Luke Berry of Precision Porting; Rhemac Motors; Sam of SA Race Trans; the boys from Outlaw Speed Shop and of course my ‘number one supporter’ Alex Mee for all of his support.
“We have been working mainly on chassis tuning. First we worked on getting the tune-up with the new unleaded fuel where it needed to be and we feel we got pretty close to the mark fairly early in the piece.
“Since then it has been mostly about chassis tuning and I think we are pretty much done now – softening up the rear before the Rowe Memorial worked a treat; so we are very, very happy with where the car is at the moment – it is exactly where we want it. Now we just have to concentrate on my driving!
“I love Portland’s South Coast Raceway and I am really looking forward to racing there. It is so green and lush and the track staff there are always fantastic, they really appreciate us and it shows. I love Mildura’s Sunset Strip for the same reason.
“It is a bit of a road trip for us to go to Portland but it is a nice drive, we all head down on the Friday and come back Monday, spending three nights there and having a really good time – we take our racing seriously but having fun with our extended racing family is also a priority.”
While unable to undertake a full racing season due to work commitments, Larcombe is making sure to get to as many events as he can.
“We are doing what we can this season – I have pretty tight work commitments and the South Coast Nationals will be my last day off for about six weeks, so I am really looking forward to it,” he explained.
“I hope to be able to take in Mildura’s Twilight Nationals in March as well and maybe even the Westernationals! That one might be a bit of a pipe dream, but we will do what we can – I have been to the Perth Motorplex a few times but I have never raced there although the Camaro came from Perth, so it would be really great if we can put it together.”
The South Coast Nationals, round six of the 2019/2020 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series, will be held at Portland’s South Coast Raceway across December 14 and 15. Entries close on December 8. For further details, please visit www.southcoastraceway.com.au or www.andra.com.au
