Roger Moorhouse will have the opportunity to secure a Westernats hat trick this weekend when the 2022 MacTrack Westernationals event hits the Perth Motorplex across March 5-6.
The MacTrack Westernationals will host the latest round of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series (SRESS), as well as the Australian Drag Racing Championship (ADRC), and the Motorplex’s Nitro Slam series across March 5 and 6.
Moorhouse heads to the Westernats with two victories at the prestigious event under his belt – one in Super Street in 2012 and one in Super Sedan just last year.
“The 2021 event was a dream run for me with a lot of luck going my way. I always say it is better to be lucky than good, and that event was sure a lucky event for me!” laughed the 50-year-old real estate agent.
“I suppose you have to take it when it falls your way, but it is not really the way I like to win. It was also great as I was pitted next to my good friend Ray Lecocq who made the final last year as well, so it was a great night for both of our teams – especially as Ray had nothing but troubles all weekend so it was great for him to make the finals too.
“The car hasn’t changed since last year – we had a new combination then, so we have kept it pretty much the same, tuning for consistency rather than trying to rotate the earth.
“When it comes to how confident I am feeling ahead of this year’s event, I would have to say I am not feeling very confident at all. I haven’t driven since last year’s event – at the start of this year we decided my son, Stuart, would take the seat and drive for the whole season, but unfortunately for him he has work commitments so he can’t get to this event, so that gives me another opportunity to have a go at it!
“I am extremely disappointed of course that Stuart is missing out, as this was supposed to be his year. He is currently sitting second in our track championship and has been driving exceptionally, so it is disappointing. But having said that, I will certainly enjoy jumping back in the seat and the car has been running incredibly consistently, so we will see what happens!”
Like many West Aussie drag racers, Moorhouse holds the MacTrack Westernationals in high esteem.
“Without a doubt the Westernats are a huge event for all West Aussies – we love the event! There is always an extra buzz in the air, and everyone tries so much harder to win – so to get through for victory you have to be either very lucky, or very good!” grinned the Waikiki (WA) resident.
“So, whoever wins that beautiful ANDRA Christmas Tree trophy well and truly deserves it.
“The Super Sedan bracket is full of amazing characters who are both very competitive and extremely friendly, so you have the best of both worlds in Super Sedan – it really is like a big drag racing family in this bracket.
“As far as my campaign goes, I will be focusing on just getting back in the seat and doing the best that I can. Without Stuart being there it is going to be very hard for me as I am going to have to do most of the work myself which will be difficult to turn the car around after each round, but I will do my best of course!
“Although Stuart won’t be there for this event, he is an integral part of our family team so I must say thank you to him for everything he does – it won’t be the same without him there.
“I also want to thank our major sponsors Acton Rockingham/Baldivis and our amazing supporting companies – ACS Sport Images, Allfast Torque Convertors and Black Magic Race Cars. I really couldn’t do what I do without the amazing support I receive from these people.”
