Qualifying in the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship for Modified, Super Sedan, Modified Bike, Super Street and Junior Dragster are run and done at the 43rd Westernationals in Perth.

Amazingly Troy Slamar needed only one pass during Q3 to take quick time in Super Sedan even letting off at half-track with a 7.368 ET. Slamar said he was up until 5:30am last night despite going through a starter motor and a broken fly wheel.

“I was up until 5:30am machining going back and forth between the Motorplex and Wangara,” he said. “At the end of the day we’ve got a good car, a safe car and a straight car. It’s tuned perfectly to go straight and we’re more than happy.”

“We’re here to entertain the crowd and we wanted this car out there for the Westernationals.”

He leads the field from Warwick Pike (7.721), Lorenzo Gullotto (8.050), Kevin Hort (8.088) and Paul Downe (8.179) in fifth.

Luke Nieuwhof is also a relieved man overcoming multiple broken sprocket bolts sending his father home for emergency repairs before qualifying even began on Friday night to top qualify in Modified Bike.

“We thrashed to run in the second qualifier and once we got out there it ran terribly,” he said. “We got the tune up right again, changed the battery and that seemed to make a difference but in the first qualifier today it didn’t want to shift gears properly.”

“The shifter had a little bit of play in it and that was probably affecting it so we fixed that and in the final qualifier in went beautifully.”

Clinton Urban (8.459) earned second spot from Brett Allen (8.726), Justin Townson (8.734) and Roger Harris (8.830).

Michelle Osborn ran quickest by some way in Modified with a 7.042 followed by Brenton Baxter (7.621), Benjamin Moignard (7.625), Shane Wynd (7.662) and Simon Lekias (7.692).

Bernie Ellerby qualified number one in Super Street with an even 11.000 in the final session from Tyron Begg (11.021), Scott Jeffreys (11.040), Shane Boekhout (11.047) and Ian Taylor (11.052).

In the junior ranks, Stuart Moorhouse posted quick time in the opening session with an 8.014 and would never look back as Matthew O’Connor (8.024), Brayden Naylor (8.025), Curtis Spadaro (8.030) and Taylah Batson (8.034) rounded out the top 5.

Qualifying for Competition Eliminator, Comp Bike, Supercharged Outlaws and Super Stock comes to a close later tonight.
