Yesterday the news delivered a disappointing blow for the Warrnambool & District Drag Racing Association. The Moyne Shire Council notified WADDRA that the proposed site is no longer an option for a purpose-built drag strip.
The following is a statement from WADDRA Club President Tony Frost
To all drag racing fans & competitors,
As a club of 24 years and having spent the past 5 years working with the Moyne Shire to pursue the land at the Old Koroit Racecourse to build a purpose-built drag racing facility it is disappointing to have received the decision that this is no longer an option for the club after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) hearing.
The club has spent in excess of over $70,000 in studies, plans, various testing and the recent VCAT hearing. The Moyne Shire and Warrnambool City Council have spent ratepayers money conducting their own studies, testing, defence lawyers all of which is funded by the ratepayers to fight us at the hearing.
As a club, we are disappointed that the wider community is going to miss out on the benefits of what our sport has to offer and the local economy boost from construction and accommodation for spectators & racers etc.
We are currently still racing at the Warrnambool Airport and with the cooperation of Warrnambool City Council intend continuing to do so in the future until a permanent site is found.
Regards,
Tony Frost
