After a strong and consistent season, Graeme Spencer was able to secure a third Super Gas Australian Title at the final round of the 17/18 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series.
While any season with a championship at the end of it is likely to have been a good one, Spencer says this one ranks right up there.
“I would have to say that in my whole career of racing, spanning around 35 years, this would have to be my best season by far,” Spencer said.
“When you compare it to past seasons, we have achieved more results from wins, going rounds and top qualifying. This is also the first season where we have competed as a whole family team, with even the kids having their jobs as crew to take care of.”
While it was a good season for Spencer, the last round still brought its own pressures.
“Obviously the weather and the dusty environment didn’t help – there was only one other competitor that was a threat to me winning my third championship,” Spencer said,
“When I went ‘red’ in the first round, my crew waited back to watch the other pairings and when my closest component also went out in the first round, we knew we had the championship won.
“I would say the fact that we had won the championship for the third time sunk in right then and there, after that first round, as the celebrations stated almost instantly! We all remained pretty excited for quite a while after that!”
While he might still be celebrating that third title, Spencer already has his eye on the 18/19 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series.
“Winning a third Super Gas championship, well it doesn’t get any better than that I think; but having said that – I am not stopping there – I will be aiming for a fourth!” Spencer said.
“I just hope our fellow racers can continue to support our bracket.
“My family, my crew and myself all work hard together getting the results we have achieved and we all enjoy the excitement together when we do well. Hopefully we can continue to do that as we support every meeting that we can next season, as we have done for the past many years.
“In the meantime, we would like to thank Summit Racing Equipment for their continued support of the championship, and also ANDRA for their efforts.”
