What a fabulous weekend the Slamfest turned out to be. Victor Bray and colleagues bought the Doorslammer circus to town and they put on a great show. The South Coast club have really developed their facility and put heaps of work into getting it ready. The massive car park paddocks were full and there was no space on the mounds.
The rained out Saturday session was rescheduled to Sunday and the crowd let back in for free was again huge. All the food outlets were calling in for supplies from all over the region. We even had Browny out on the track with a broom at one stage.
We hadn’t been there for a few years so it was great to catch up with all the locals who had previously made us so welcome. We even saw SA drag racing ambassadors Lenny and Jan Leonard strolling around having a look see. We all doubted if Portland had ever hosted such a large event. A must to go bacl to.
Congratulations go to Doina Day who edged us out in the semi final by 0.004 seconds. We’ve enjoyed many a tussle with Doina over the years and on this occasion some tyre slip on the run was enough for her to take the win. It was her revenge for taking the outright track from her.
Our outright ET and Speed records we backed up so its official. The A1 / Jasons Pallets team is now both the outright and alcohol funny car track record holder with 4.174 and 171.76mph. One for the Outlaw class to savour, sure in the knowledge that the Doorslammers and others will be back for a crack at it.
Our experience at Portland has made us more determined to get them into a 3 city 1/8th mile series with Mildura and Whyalla. There was plenty of support for it at the track and inintial discussions have already been had and some upfront sponsorship money either promised or banked.
