The Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) is pleased to announce that ANDRA Championship Drag Racing will return later this year with the announcement today that a new ANDRA Regional Championship for Sportsman competitors has been given the green light.

Complementing the national NDRC Aeroflow Sportsman Championship and local track championships, this ANDRA Championship will fit in at the second level of a three-tiered structure for Sportsman racing.

The decision to implement an ANDRA series is a direct result of member feedback from the recent members survey.

“ANDRA is a member based organisation and will always be there for our members,” said ANDRA Chief Executive Officer, Tim McAvaney.

“The overwhelming feedback has been that ANDRA needs a platform to continue to build on its rich history.

“The important things to our members, as highlighted in the recent survey responses, include a ‘racers’ championship, incorporating ANDRA Christmas Tree Trophies, The John Storm Memorial Trophy, the Longest Distance Travel Award and Top Qualifier Medals.

“Sportsman competitors have also been loud and clear on the fact that they also need events where they shine and are ‘the show,’ while consistent application of rules through the ANDRA rulebook has also been an important point raised by our members.

“As an organisation which operates for our members, it is vital for ANDRA to act on this feedback.

“Establishing this series will allow us to appropriately serve our member base and continue to deliver our respected and sought-after member benefits and awards such as the John Storm Memorial, while filling a gap in the Australian drag racing landscape.”

With ANDRA sanctioned tracks supporting the idea in principle, the hard work will now begin to form a calendar, with initial plans pointing to it comprising between 6 and 10 rounds, commencing later this year.

Further details regarding dates and venues will be released at the earliest possible opportunity.

“Finding suitable dates will be key to this process, as we look to ensure clashes are avoided – therefore permitting competitors to race successfully at all three levels of Sportsman racing,” McAvaney said.

“It is important for competitors to realise that this series will complement what is already in place and ANDRA will continue to support the NDRC as the National Championship, across both sanctioning bodies.

“We will also look to find a naming rights sponsor for the series and sponsors for individual categories within it, so if any ANDRA supporters wish to back this initiative, please contact me via email.”
