Bill Goonan is quickly establishing himself in the ranks of Top Doorslammer with his first steps in the category producing positive results.
Goonan might have just missed the field at the Australian Nationals, but to him qualifying ninth out of 18 cars was nothing to scoff at.
“We have made some great progress in the last two months with only nine full passes on a brand new car,” the Queenslander said. “Clocking a 6.10 personal best at our first meeting in Top Doorslammer at Sydney Dragway and coming ninth out of 18 cars was a huge accomplishment as a rookie team.”
The brightly coloured Camaro is now being readied for the 2014 season and Goonan says the learning curve has been taken well.
“As a rookie this team and I have learned a lot this past six months since debuting the car at the Winternationals,” he said. “We have been getting the car down most tracks this year that we have raced on.
“My crew chief Gary May is starting to get his head around this car and how it reacts to slight changes, at the moment the car is on safe mode as we are giving the driver and crew more confidence with every lap we do.”
Goonan said there is much left to come from the car when it comes back next season.
“We haven’t played with any of the good bits yet that make you go fast, we were more into getting laps and being consistent first, then go fast,” he said.
