The inaugural round of the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship at Sydney Dragway saw many impressive performances last weekend, not the least of which was Greg Clayton's win in Competition with new performance standards in the BB/A class.

The Queensland Tyre and Retreading team claimed their first gold Christmas tree and took maximum points for the first round iof the series, winning, top qualifying and setting both ends of the national record.

While the week started off somewhat in chaos, with Clayton badly twisting an ankle while loading the car for the Sydney road trip, the team quickly put that behind them with a 6.13 pass.

“We knew we had the power with the new PSI supercharger and Ken Lowe fuel system on board, plus Fuchs Lubricants now protecting the internals of the engine, we only needed to stay consistent and drive well to be in with a chance of winning the event,” explained Clayton.

“My crew were outstanding in preparing the car all weekend and that allowed me to concentrate on driving and cutting good reaction times through eliminations.

“To win the Australian Nationals is a dream come true for the entire team and we are still pinching ourselves, it’s a little surreal to be honest. Without the support of our sponsors QTR, Bridgestone Select Salisbury, RD Williams and Fuchs Lubricants, we could not have done it and the win is as much theirs as it is ours.”

The team are now looking forward to heading to the next round of the series at Portland’s Fuchs South Coast Raceway in January, which will be the first ANDRA championship racing in Victoria since 2001.
