O'Rourke Motorsport expands with sedan.
Debbie O’Rourke is readying a new race car to join her team’s existing O’Rourke Motorsport Top Alcohol Funny Car.
The car will be a Pontiac Firebird Top Doorslammer (styled on the one below) built to race in the ANDRA-sanctioned Slamfest, a series of eighth mile (201m) races for sedans in Victoria and Tasmania.
O’Rourke said a recent trip to Adelaide’s exhibition event inspired the team to get on with building the new ride.
“It was great to be part of the action in Adelaide, we had a ball and it felt just like the old days, lots of people and lots of fun,” she said. “We bought Adam Croker’s Top Doorslammer Camaro with the intention of one day rebuilding it and Adelaide inspired us to get a plan!”
The new body is coming from the USA and it is anticipated the car will be ready to go by mid 2012.
In the meantime, Debbie and husband Grant O’Rourke will continue to contend the ANDRA Pro Series events with their Top Alcohol Funny Car, which is also due for an update.
“Grant will be building me a new chassis that will sport the carbon fibre Monte Carlo body that we’ve had for a number of years,” she said. “Our current Camaro Funny Car is heavy compared to other front running cars.
“The way we figure it and because of the lull in racing events, our priority is the Pontiac followed closely by the Monte Carlo. That way, we can hop between the two series events – getting fun out of both but in different ways.
“Grant’s doing an excellent job of tuning, the crew is always having a crack and (son) Josh is old enough to be part of it.”
