The Australian Modified Bike Championship is hotting up and it looks to be a three-way shoot out between New South Wales’ Joe Khoury and Victorians David Carroll and Edgell Mallis.

Just 100 points separates first from third with all three in action this weekend during Round 9 of the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship at Mildura Sunset Strip.

For second placed Carroll and third placed Mallis it is somewhat of a home game but for Championship leader Khoury, it will be a case of the unknown as he takes to the Mildura track for the first time.

“I can’t comment on Mildura because I’ve never raced there before,” says Khoury. “But fellow racers tell me it’s a great eighth mile track.

“David Carroll and Edgell Mallis are both from Victoria running very well and consistent. I would have to say, consistency on my dial in times would be the key to staying in front (in the Championship).”

Khoury hopes for a big performance this weekend running 5.90 – 6.05 second passes to secure enough National Championship points to return home to compete for his local Sydney Dragway Track Championship and prepare for the Australian Nationals at same venue.

I’ll only be heading to Adelaide (for Round 10) if I don’t do well at Mildura, to protect my lead. Then hopefully my home track advantage will see me through at the finals in Sydney.

“I hope I don’t have to go to Adelaide, because I am currently in second place in our Track Championships at Sydney Dragway. So I am thinking I have a good chance at doubling up on two titles.”

Round 9 of the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship will be held at Mildura Sunset Strip on September 13-14. Qualifying begins from 11am on Saturday and Eliminations commence from 10am Sunday. Tickets are available at the gate. For more information please visit: www.sunsetstrip.org.au
