Don’t expect Leanne Braggs to back down against her son should the pair meet during Modified eliminations at the Southern Nationals presented by Fiat Professional & Essendon Chrysler Jeep Dodge next week.

Son Michael Braggs has decided to join Leanne in Modified and the Red Venom driver has dished the first good natured rib ahead of the event at Calder Park Raceway on April 4-5.

“Michael has decided to come and join me in Modified,” she said.  “I think he figures he has tried most other classes so let’s go and show mum how it’s done.”

“Hopefully we don’t meet each other until the pointy end as I know neither of us will lay down for the other! Steve (husband) has to back me if he wants his dinner cooked, but Michael works for us so it is a bit awkward.”

During Round 4 of the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship at Adelaide International Raceway, Braggs shot to the top of the qualifying standings but was eliminated by Shane Wynd in the second round in tough conditions.

“I sat in the staging lanes before my second round pass and watched Kenny Stewart go out, then Jess Turner and figured us Victorians were in for a bad night. I didn’t plan on following suit, but I broke out to Wynd who put down a pass that was always going to be hard to beat.”

“Finding a dial in was a bit difficult with the huge head wind that came on Saturday – we were a full tenth slower on Saturday than Friday – then all of a sudden, not quite a tenth! We made some changes to the car before Adelaide, so hopefully we can take that data and be super consistent at Calder.”

Braggs said she is looking forward to the Southern Nationals as husband Steve pores over the car to ensure it’s ready to go.

“I always forget to thank my husband Steve for his tireless commitment to something that is ‘all about me!’ I have the easy and enjoyable part and all of the behind the scenes work is done by Steve.”

“The car usually magically gets taken out of the trailer, cleaned, serviced and reloaded ready for me to get in the tow car and head off to wherever our next meeting is.  I sometimes don’t even see it between meetings, so I am really spoilt.”

“At the track isn’t much different.  I come back from a run, and before I know it, it is ready to head back out again.  I do get the data out – I’ll have to teach him how to use a computer.”

The Southern Nationals presented by Fiat Professional & Essendon Chrysler Jeep Dodge will be held at Calder Park Raceway April 4-5, 2014.
