29 June 2011
Round two of the 2011 Track Championship Series kicks off this Saturday at Hidden Valley Drag Strip. Word has been spreading about how good the new track is and several local teams have made their way back to Darwin to compete this weekend.
The 1990 Camaro of Dieter Herrmann will be back for the first time since his spectacular accident in 2009 where he hit the wall at half track, all but writing the car off. It has been a long rebuild but early testing has proven it to be a low 8 second car.
Craig Davis is also registered in an all new Mustang powered by a massive 600 cubic inch big block V8. Running a personal best of 7.14 seconds it’s a solid contender for a potential class win this weekend if he can adapt to the new track.
The nitrous powered V8’s are going to add some interesting variety to the Outlaw class against the traditionally dominant supercharged cars.
The up and coming Junior Dragster category has also expanded to include a second brother and sister combination of Caitlin and Jack Burt with this being Jack’s first time behind the wheel. Drag racing is in the family with their father, Sam Burt, competing in the Outlaw class in a HT Monaro. Interestingly, the father of fellow Junior Dragster competitors Nathan and Jodie Coles also competes in the Outlaw class. Both Sam Burt and Peter Coles are taking a break this weekend to help their children compete.
Junior Dragsters are 210cc powered vehicles that can cover the 1/8th mile in as little as 7.9 seconds and are driven by children as young as 8 years of age.
With full fields of bike and car brackets it’s going to be an action packed night of racing.
