Miller High School is giving a practical edge to classes with students building a drag car in Sydney’s south-west.

As their Holden One Tonner nears completion, the students not only have a pretty tough race car they can be proud of but a wealth of skills and knowledge that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

The project began late in 2010 after the school identified Automotive as a way of engaging students who often struggle with attendance and mainstream subjects.

“With the help of Southwest Connect (a government department based in Sydney’s west which assists schools to ensure that young people attain a Year 12 HSC or equivalent) we have established industry partners who assist with knowledge, work placement and industry visits,” said the class teacher Mr Jeff Goodwin.

With the WB Holden One Tonner donated by their teacher the boys systematically set about pursuing their goal of racing in the entry level ANDRA (Australian National Drag Racing Association) drag racing category Super Street, with the class working as the pit crew.

So far the car has had the chassis rebuilt, complete with a custom tilting tray. The cabin has had numerous rust repairs and a roll cage has been built and fitted by the students.

“We have fitted an LS1 and stock auto trans for the moment and when the time comes our partner Vince Rigoli of V&E Rigoli Racing will handle the tune-up,” said Mr Goodwin.

After being prepared in school by the students the car was recently re-sprayed by partner Sultans Automotive. With many of the students doing work placement there during this time it was a fantastic hands-on experience for the students giving them a true sense of ownership and pride.

“Understandably we still have a long way to go,” said Mr Goodwin. “But we have a dedicated crew who are gaining many industry skills, and who, as well as having fun, are making themselves very employable.”
