Two new points leaders.
John Zappia seized the lead in the ANDRA Pro Series Top Doorslammer championship on Sunday with a close win over Robin Judd at Perth Motorplex.
Zappia’s 5.86sec. run from the Procomp Motorsport Monaro was only just enough to edge a 5.87sec. from Judd in the all Western Australian contest.
Peter Kapiris, the points leader going into the event, went out in the first round after making contact with the safety barriers, opening the door for Zappia or Judd to take over the lead if they went to the final.
Zappia qualified second and then defeated Ben Bray’s Sidchrome Monaro in the first round, though it came as a cost as he needed to put his spare engine in after he torched a cylinder hard and part of the engine block.
After thrashing to make the change Zappia emerged in the semi finals to take out Ben’s father Victor Bray, with a more cautious tune up put in to ensure the engine would live through to the final.
Denis Whiting emerged as a new threat to the ANDRA Pro Series championship for Pro Stock after taking the win against Tyronne Tremayne.
Whiting not only took the win, but set new national records for both time and speed, running as quick as 7.02sec. for the quarter mile Kwinana strip.
Whiting had a new engine package that paid immediate dividends, securing maximum points from the event. He was able to pass Denis Whiting in the points.
Tremayne meanwhile was left to wonder what could have been. Driving the family’s new Pontiac GXP race car, he had some engine damage in the semi finals and could only idle up to the start line to watch Whiting run his record pass. For his efforts however he did scorch from eleventh to third in the points.
The championship for both categories now moves on Sydney Dragway on March 24 and 25.
